Gijon is located in the north-western part of Spain on the coast of Cantabrian Sea in the Bay of Biscay. It is the largest city by population in the province of Asturias and the 15th largest in Spain. The capital of Asturias, Oviedo, is only 24 km away from Gijón.
Gijón developed as an industrial city in the steel and naval industries in the 20th century but went on a decline in recent years due to less manufacturing in these industries. Therefore Gijón is making the switch on focussing on tourism, higher education, commercial and R&D industries recently.
