Location details

New South is a housing development in the south of Antwerp overlooking the River Schelde. Since the trans-shipment activities departed from the port in the 60s it was a deserted area. The opening of the new courthouse and the renovation of the former customs house by the Bank of Breda in 2006 were the first momenta to the development of the site. Since spring 2010, the private developer Triple Living owns much of the land of New South. With approximately 2,000 new homes, new features, and a large park New South is to anticipate the current shortage of green and public facilities in the area, and the expected population growth in the next 15 years.

The development is built in phases from north to south so that the first parts getting ready are the ones being just next to the city. The full realization of the New South will take at least 15 years.

Why do expats like Antwerp

Expats love being based in Antwerp. Belgium, in general, has a pretty good work-life balance and especially the people in Antwerp you can call “Bon-vivants” or as them claim themselves “bourgondiers”.

Antwerp is a medieval settlement and unlike the majority of big cities in Europe, Antwerp has been preserved through the years. In WWII, some bombs fell on the city but all major, medieval structures have remained untouched. The highlight and the symbol of Antwerp must be the impressive Cathedral Of Our Lady in the city center. This cathedral was built between 1352 and 1521 on the grounds of a previous church. That can give you an idea, how far back the history of the city goes. In the cathedral, you can find some of the most precious paintings and artwork by the Flemish classics such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaen, etc.

Because of the large history, Antwerp is filled with urban legends and tales. Book a tour around the city by some amazing tour guides such as Tanguy Ottomer and discover some of the lucrative and sometimes scary myths that go around the city.
