San Fermin

The San Fermín Festivities (in Spanish: Fiestas de San Fermín) are annual celebrations in Pamplona in Spain in honour of Saint San Fermín. The celebrations officially start on July 6. This is followed by a week full of food festivals, Basque folk dances, open-air concerts, street theatre, fireworks and a giant feast to conclude on July 14.

The apotheosis of the festivals is the Encierro. Eight fighting bulls will be chased through the narrow streets of Pamplona Thousands of daredevils, especially young men, want to prove their courage and speed by staying ahead of the bulls. The runners can be recognized by their white clothing, red handkerchief (pañuelo rojo) around the neck, and red belt around their waist (faja).

So, if you find yourself gazing through your window the second week of July, do not be surprised when you see a bunch of people dressed in white pyjamas running for their lives being chased by a herd of steaming bulls.
