Antwerp is a great place for expats and especially if you like a good work-life balance. Belgians are “Bourgondiers” or as they say it in Antwerp “Bon-vivant”, meaning they like the good things in life such as good food which is plenty to find.
The true name of Antwerp comes from the Celtic word “Ando verpis”. It means “throwing mud or land against the riverbank”. But a lot of citizens of Antwerp prefer to tell you another story which contains the legend of Brabo and the giant Antigoon. This is just one example of the many legends that you can find around the city.
Antwerp was very well preserved through all the years and still has structures that go way back in time. Although of strategic importance due to the part, Antwerp has survived many foreign settlements and conquerors.
The majestic Cathedral of Our Lady is the symbol and most important building of Antwerp. It was built between 1352 and 1521. The cathedral stores some of the most important works and statues by famous artist such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaen etc.
