Because of Antwerp’s location, recent investments in efficiency and the renewed interest of companies in the Far East, the city has seen record figures in 2016 and will do so more in the years to come.

TOTAL

Total’s largest refinery is located in the port of Antwerp. The complex recently underwent a €1.2 billion upgrade, merging three different parts of the complex into a single integrated refinery to meet demand for lower sulphur, lighter fuels. With its new capacity of 330,000 barrels per day of petrochemicals refined from crude oil transported by pipeline from the port of Rotterdam, the Total refinery is of fundamental importance to the port of Antwerp and is one of the best-performing companies in Antwerp.

AQUAFIN

Aquafin was initially a government project set up by the Flemish government. From Antwerp, Aquafin provides the wastewater treatment infrastructure, both in design and execution. Since it was founded in 1990, its capacity has doubled in order to remediate the 3.8 million inhabitants of the Flemish Region.

VLM AIRLINES

After a series of takeovers, VLM Airlines has restarted after a failed – and now folded – Thomas Cook company. The company is now based in Antwerp under the umbrella of SHS Aviation and with the restart of operations in November 2017, the company is now moving towards a better future and is now operating routes throughout Europe, expecting to see more of this company as it shakes off in recent years.

ANHEUSER-BUSCH - INBEV

Anheuser-Busch is one of the top 500 companies in the world, with an annual turnover of $45b, and is simply the largest company in Belgium, with its headquarters in Leuven, 40 km outside Antwerp. With brands such as Budweiser, Becks and Carling, AB has a 20% market share in global beer sales. Following the merger of the 2 largest Belgian breweries in 1987, the InBev company acquired Anheuser-Busch in 2008 and has since merged breweries from around the world.
