Within a small walking distance, you can find the tram stop which will bring you within 5 minutes to the closest subway stations to transfer to anywhere in the city. You will find a lot of stores conveniently located within walking distance. Because Koekelberg being a smaller district of Brussels, you can still find local bakeries, butchers and other merchants nearby.
The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic Minor Basilica. The church is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, inspired by the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur in Paris. Symbolically, King Leopold II laid the first stone of the Basilica in 1905 during the celebrations of the 75thanniversary of Belgian independence. The construction was halted by the two World Wars and finished only in 969. It is one of the ten largest Roman Catholic churches in the world. Located in the Parc Elisabeth atop the Koekelberg Hill, the church is popularly known as the Koekelberg Basilica and it overlooks the city.
The Royal Castle of Laeken, official home of the Belgian Royal Family, is situated here. It has been the royal residence since accession to the throne of King Leopold I in 1831. The former King Albert II and Queen Paola live in the Belvedere in the grounds of this castle, while King Phillipe and Queen Mathilde live in the main castle.
